Case Study: Spring Awakening Broadway Production

8 Tony Awards. From the rehearsal room to Radio City.
19th & 7th’s Keith Shapiro directed, produced, and edited press reels showcasing the production’s best musical numbers for television and media outlets, interviewed the cast on the red carpet for the Tonys at Radio City, and captured the show live across multiple stages, including the national tour launch in San Francisco.

The Brief:

Spring Awakening arrived on Broadway as one of the most acclaimed productions of its era. Its Executive Producer needed a press reel featuring the production’s 10 strongest musical numbers, and Keith Shapiro of 19th & 7th was brought in to direct it.

The Challenge:

The production required high-quality multi-camera recordings on tight timelines while working around rental houses, equipment, small crews, cast changes, travel, and evolving production schedules.

The Strategy:

The strategy was to create polished, press-ready footage that captured the energy of the live production while adapting to new casts, performances, and locations.

  • Capture the production with professional HD multi-camera crews
  • Select and edit the 10 strongest musical numbers
  • Adapt recordings as the cast and production evolved
  • Coordinate crews, equipment, venues, cast, producers, and editors
  • Create press-ready content for Broadway and national tour markets

The Impact:

The finished press reels were distributed to major New York metropolitan television stations, providing footage for on-air reviews of the production and its new casts.

  • 11 Tony Award nominations
  • 8 Tony Award wins
  • Cast performance broadcast live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall
  • Press coverage supporting Broadway cast changes and the national tour
  • Press reels distributed to markets across the U.S.

What began as a single press reel evolved into an ongoing multi-camera production spanning Broadway, the Tony Awards, multiple casts, and the national tour.

The work required moving seamlessly between performances, rehearsals, and interviews, bringing together multiple crews and complex production logistics while maintaining a consistent visual standard.

The Execution:

Keith directed multiple camera crews throughout the production’s Broadway run, Tony Awards appearances, cast changes, and national tour launch.

  • Recorded the Broadway production with 3 HD cameras
  • Recorded Tony Awards rehearsals with 2 cameras
  • Captured cast and producer interviews on the Tony Awards red carpet
  • Captured post-award interviews following the show’s 8 Tony wins
  • Re-recorded the production with 5 HD cameras following major cast changes
  • Directed the filming of the first national-tour performance in San Francisco with 5 HD cameras
  • Produced and edited press reels for television markets across the U.S.
